Super Channel Files for Bankruptcy Protection

EDMONTON: Allarco Entertainment, the owners of Canadian pay-TV service Super Channel, has filed for bankruptcy protection from its creditors.

According to documents filed with the Court of Queen’s Bench of Alberta, the company has liabilities of $139 million and assets of $68 million. Allarco officials indicate the day-to-day operations will continue as usual for the network.

"We want to make it clear to our customer base that Super Channel is not bankrupt or in receivership," said Malcolm Knox, Super Channel’s president. "We take seriously the licence the CRTC gave us in 2006 to offer competition to Canadian consumers in the pay-television sector.

"Our biggest challenge has been accessing consumers through distribution undertakings that have become increasingly powerful vertically integrated companies which no longer take CRTC decisions seriously."

Super Channel is one of three pay-TV services in Canada, alongside The Movie Network in Eastern Canada (owned by Astral) and Movie Central in Western Canada (owned by Corus).
