Rovio Acquires Animation Outfit in Finland

ESPOO: Finnish studio Kombo has been acquired by Rovio, the company behind the the hit Angry Birds franchise, as part of its efforts to bolster its animation production capabilities.

Following the transaction—which encompasses an undisclosed sum of cash and stock—Kombo will focus their production efforts entirely on Rovio properties. Rovio says the move is part of a long-term strategy to create "a world-class powerhouse in animated entertainment."

"We have had a long and fruitful relationship with Kombo in the past," said Mikael Hed, the CEO of Rovio. "This acquisition is an important step in the execution of our media strategy. The attitude, creativity and quality of Kombo’s work is simply fantastic, and we look forward to delighting our fans with more Kombo animations."

Ilmari Hakkola, president of Kombo, added, "We are very excited to be a part of Rovio. Now we have the possibility to create bigger productions to a very wide and global audience."
