Restrepo Co-Director Killed in Libya

MISRATA: Tim Hetherington, the co-director of the Oscar-nominated Afghan war doc Restrepo, was killed in an explosion in the Libyan city of Misrata yesterday.

"It is with great sadness we learned that our son and brother photographer and filmmaker Tim Hetherington was killed in Misrata, Libya by a rocket-propelled grenade," said a statement from his family. "Tim was in Libya to continue his ongoing multimedia project to highlight humanitarian issues during time of war and conflict. He will be forever missed."

"National Geographic is devastated by the tragic news of Tim Hetherington’s death in Libya," said Tim Kelly, president of National Geographic Society. "This is a sad and terrible day. We join the community of dedicated photojournalists and documentarians around the world who are mourning his loss."

Another photojournalist, Chris Hondros, was also killed in the blast.
