Production Commences on New Shaftesbury Drama

TORONTO: Production has begun on Bloodletting & Miraculous Cures, Shaftesbury Films’ new 8×1-hour drama series for launch on Canada’s Movie Central and The Movie Network early next year.

Based on Vincent Lam’s award-winning collection of short stories, the show follows three young doctors navigating medical school, residency and their first years as doctors in a busy Toronto hospital. Filming began June 29 and runs until September 23 in and around Toronto and Hamilton. The cast includes Shawn Ashmore (X-Men), Mayko Nguyen (ReGenesis) and Byron Mann (Dark Angel).

“Prior to its winning the Giller Prize, we read Bloodletting & Miraculous Cures and knew that not only had Vincent Lam created a unique and bold look at ER doctors, but had done so with great visual flare,” said Christina Jennings, the chairman of Shaftesbury Films and the show’s executive producer. “It was perfect material for pay-TV and we’re delighted The Movie Network and Movie Central came on board so quickly. It has been great having Vincent as our consultant and working closely with the talented screenwriter Jason Sherman.”
