North American SVOD Base to Hit 147 Million

There will be about 147 million SVOD subscribers in North America by the end of this year, according to GlobalData, which projects that number will rise by a compound annual growth rate of 9 percent through 2023.

The U.S. accounts for more than 90 percent of SVOD subscriptions in North America, according to GlobalData’s OTT Video Content, Pricing and Market Opportunity in the Americas report.

“Home to some of the leading SVOD platforms globally such as Netflix, Amazon Prime Video and HBO, the U.S. SVOD market is highly competitive with internet companies, production houses and telecommunications companies vying for market share,” said Eulalia Marín-Sorribes, technology analyst at GlobalData. “The recent launch of new SVOD platforms Apple TV+ and Disney+ will heat up competition in the U.S. market even further, increasing pressure not only on traditional pay-TV operators but also on incumbent SVOD platforms such as Netflix.”
