LOS ANGELES: MGM and MTV have teamed up to co-produce a new 12×1-hour series that is a modern take on the classic ’80s film Teen Wolf.

The series stars Tyler Posey (Brothers and Sisters) as a newly bitten werewolf. Dylan O’Brien plays his best friend, Crystal Reed is the mysterious new girl in town and Tyler Hoechlin (7th Heaven) is the older, possibly dangerous werewolf. Production will get under way this summer. Teen Wolf is from Jeff Davis, the creator of Criminal Minds, and René Echevarria, the executive producer of The 4400.

MGM holds the worldwide distribution rights outside of the U.S. for the new Teen Wolf series. The show is set to air on MTV.

Chris Ottinger, the executive VP of MGM Worldwide Television, said, “We’re excited to be in business with MTV on the Teen Wolf production and MTV is the perfect network home for this show. The youth audience is really crazy about this genre and we’re pleased to bring this werewolf mythology series to television. We are taking the characters through the traditional male-female relationship challenges, both the conflict and the romance, and we’ll deal with young adult relationships in a serious manner. We have a young cast that is amazing and fresh who resonate with the targeted audience for the series. Drama, romance, conflict, comedy, jeopardy, mysteries—Teen Wolf will have it all.”

Gary Marenzi, co-president of MGM Worldwide Television, said: “Teen Wolf has all of the right elements for global success, including suspense, drama, romance and supernatural powers. We’ve assembled a great creative team to enhance the quality look and feel of the production, and the show can be programmed across multiple time periods. Teens and young adults all over the world will readily identify with Teen Wolf’s appealing cast, and come back every week to be with their favorite characters.”
