MGM HD Channel Heads to Brazil

LOS ANGELES: A Portuguese-language version of MGM Networks’ HD channel is launching on SKY Brazil, serving as a complement to its stand-definition counterpart, which debuted in Brazil in December 1997.

The 24/7 linear network offers a library of classic and contemporary films in the 1080i high-definition format. It’s backed by the world’s largest modern film library, consisting of more than 4,100 titles. Brazil is the fourth market to launch a localized version of the MGM HD Channel, which debuted in Poland in December 2006. MGM HD Channel is also available in the U.S. and Israel.

“MGM is committed to bringing the compelling HD viewing experience to movie lovers the world over as we continue to aggressively expand our HD presence internationally,” said Bruce Tuchman, the president of MGM Networks. “SKY viewers in Brazil will enjoy the incomparable experience of viewing choice selections from the MGM library, the world’s largest modern film catalogue, broadcast in the clarity of this amazing broadcast medium. We are also pleased to expand our relationship with SKY in Brazil, and thank them for their support and passion about this project, along with their many years of commitment to the MGM standard definition business. We are also looking forward to further expansion opportunities for our HD channels not just across Latin America, but throughout the global marketplace.”

Melvin Perez, the president of MGM Networks Latin America, added: “It is with great pleasure that we announce the launch of MGM HD in Brazil, one of the first markets in the world to launch the original MGM Channel in standard definition. Throughout the years, we have developed an important connection with our audience in Brazil by customizing successful local programs such as Director’s Choice, where renowned Brazilian film makers like Bruno Barreto and Carla Camurati select and do commentary on the best productions from MGM’s vast libraries. Having MGM HD incorporated into our portfolio of channels takes our business to a higher level in an industry that is in constant change, and it shows that despite the global economic situation, HD technology is on a powerful upward trajectory and MGM Networks Latin America is thrilled to continue to participate in the growth of pay TV’s future in the region.”
