LOS ANGELES: HBO has picked up the new comedy Girls, created by and starring Lena Dunham, with executive producers Judd Apatow and Jenni Konner.

Dunham (Tiny Furniture) wrote and directed the series pilot. She also executive produces along with Apatow and Konner, as well as Ilene S. Landress as co-executive producer. Dunham stars in the series with a cast that also includes Jemima Kirke (Tiny Furniture), Allison Williams (American Dreams), Adam Driver (HBO’s You Don’t Know Jack) and Zosia Mamet (Mad Men).

Girls, which is set to start shooting in New York this spring, is a comedy about the assorted humiliations and rare triumphs of a group of girls in their early 20s.

"Lena Dunham quickly established herself as an important young talent with her first feature film," said Sue Naegle, the president of HBO Entertainment. "We are thrilled to team up with her and fellow executive producers Judd Apatow and Jenni Konner for this exciting project."
