LONDON: Canada’s CBC has secured a multi-year deal with ITV Studios Global Entertainment for digital catch-up rights for the British series Coronation Street.

Coronation Street catch-ups will be available on iTunes and CBC’s online VOD catch-up service. Coronation Street, which portrays the everyday life of a British community, celebrated its 50th anniversary in the U.K. last year and has become the number one drama serial in Canada. It is now broadcast in more than 60 territories, including China, Australia, Africa and the Middle East.

Tobias de Graaff, the director of global TV distribution at ITV Studios, said, “Coronation Street’s touching portrayal of British life in a backstreet of Manchester has been taken to heart by Canadian viewers and is becoming as important to audiences in Canada as it is here in the U.K. We are delighted to be extending our relationship with our long-term partners in Canada who have given Corrie the fantastic support it deserves.”

Tony Warren, the creator of Coronation Street, added, “I am delighted to hear of the new Canadian deal especially as the unsung hero of the show, Harry Elton, who was the original executive producer and a Canadian, had the foresight to commission the program.”
