NEW YORK: The International Academy of Television Arts & Sciences has announced the winners for its news and current affairs categories, with Brazil’s TV Globo and NHK of Japan scoring first-time wins.

TV Globo’s Jornal Nacional: War on Drugs won in the news category. The piece covers the four-day battle during which security forces took control of a major drug dealer’s stronghold in Rio, where some 400,000 people live. NHK’s Back from the Brink: Inside the Chilean Mine Disaster report won in the current affairs category. The report was on the Chilean mine disaster that trapped 33 miners underground in August 2010.

Nominees for the ten other International Emmy Awards categories will be announced October 3 in Cannes. Winners will be announced at the 39th International Emmy Awards Gala on November 21 in New York City.

"Although TV Globo and NHK are both large and respected media organizations, this is the first time either has won an International Emmy for news. We take great pride in their achievements and congratulate them and the journalists behind these riveting reports," said Bruce L. Paisner, the president and CEO of The International Academy of Television Arts & Sciences.
