International Emmy Winners Announced

NEW YORK: The winners across ten categories were named at last night’s International Emmy Awards Gala, with five wins going to the U.K.  

The performance wins both went to British talent, with Ben Whishaw named best actor for the BBC’s Criminal Justice and Julie Walters named best actress for her role in the BBC’s A Short Stay in Switzerland. The Brits also won in the category for arts programming, with the award going to The Mona Lisa Curse from Oxford Film & Television for Channel 4, as well as the children and young people category, for Dustbin Baby from Kindle Entertainment. The U.K.’s The Ascent of Money, from Chimerica Media/Education Broadcasting Corporation for Channel 4, was named best documentary. 

Brazil’s TV Globo (pictured) won in the telenovela category for India: A Love StoryJapan won in the comedy category, with Hoshi Shinichi’s Short Shorts from Telecom Staff for NHK in association with NHK Enterprises. Best drama series went to Denmark’s The Protectors, from the Danish Broadcasting Corporation in association with ZDF/NRK/SVT. The award for best non-scripted entertainment program went to Park Lane TV Productions’ The Phone from the Netherlands. Best TV movie/mini-series went to The Wolves of Berlin from Germany’s Ziegler Film & Co. KG/ZDF.

Further highlights of the event include Markus Schächter, ZDF’s director-general, being awarded with the Directorate Award, presented by former U.S. Secretary of State Henry Kissinger. Sir David Frost was presented with the International Emmy Founders Award by Barbara Walters.
