HBO Wins Big at Golden Globes

HOLLYWOOD, January 14: At last night’s Golden Globes press
conference, HBO led the pack with six wins, including Extras being named best comedy/musical series and the
HBO/Granada/Channel 4 co-production Longford scoring in the mini-series/TV movie category; best
drama, meanwhile, went to AMC’s Mad Men.

The hour-long low-key press conference broadcast on NBC last
night replaced the annual star-studded three-hour ceremony, which was scrapped
in the wake of the Writers Guild of America strike.

The freshman hit AMC’s Mad Men won for best drama series against last year’s winner
ABC’s Grey’s Anatomy and fellow
nominees FX’s Damages, HBO’s Big
Love
, FOX’s House and Showtime’s The Tudors. On the performance side, the series’ male lead, Jon
Hamm, picked up a trophy, with Glenn Close clinching the win in the female
category for her work on Damages.

In the musical or comedy category, Extras won over fellow HBO title Entourage, NBC’s 30 Rock, Showtime’s Californication
and ABC’s newcomer Pushing Daisies. In
the performance categories, 30 Rock’s
Tina Fey won for female comedic lead, and for best actor, David Duchovny beat
out last year’s winner, Alec Baldwin for 30 Rock, as wel as Steve Carell for NBC’s The Office, Ricky Gervais for Extras and
Lee Pace for Pushing Daisies.

Best mini-series/TV movie went to Longford, with its male lead, Jim Broadbent, scoring a win on
the performance side, and Queen Latifah taking home the trophy for her
performance in Life Support.

In feature films, Atonement won for best motion picture—drama. Julie Christie won as best
actress for her work on Away From Her and Daniel Day-Lewis took home the trophy for There Will Be
Blood. Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street
won as the best motion picture—comedy or musical,
and Johnny Depp was given the award for lead actor for his role in the film.
Marion Cotillard was the winner on the female side, notching up an award for
her performance in La Vie En Rose. Best
director went to The Diving Bell and the Butterfly’s Julian Schnabel.
