NEW YORK: HBO Documentary Films has picked up the U.S. TV rights to Vinyl Films’ The Union, directed by Cameron Crowe and chronicling the collaboration between Elton John and Leon Russell.

The Union looks at the creative life of John and his collaborative album with Russell, his early-career idol. The album was produced by T Bone Burnett.

Crowe (Almost Famous, Jerry Maguire) starting capturing the artists on film in November 2009, looking at the entire writing and recording process that heralded the album. The film had its world premiere as the opening night selection at this year’s Tribeca Film Festival.

"I’m a great fan of HBO and their extraordinary programming, so I’m particularly thrilled that they will be airing The Union," commented John.
