GTV Plans Further Investment in African Pay TV

LONDON, September 2: The
African pay-TV service GTV has received a further $35 million in funding,
bringing its total investment capital to date to $200 million.

The DTH platform is
available in numerous African markets, including Cameroon, Ghana, Kenya,
Namibia, Sierra Leone, Uganda, Zambia and Zimbabwe, and is currently proceeding
with a phased rollout across sub-Saharan Africa. The service is provided by
Gateway Broadcast Services (GTV), a subsidiary of Gateway Communications, which
recently sold off its telco business to the African mobile operator Vodacom
Group.

Julian McIntyre, the
founder and managing director of GTV, said, “Following Gateway’s tremendous
success in African telecommunications, we believe that the media industry and
in particular pay-television represents the next great investment opportunity
on the continent. We have demonstrated our commitment to GTV with almost $200
million of investment to-date and following the extraordinary success since
launch, we are committed to further long-term financing.”
