Globo Begins Digital Broadcasts in Brazil

SÃO PAULO, December 3: TV Globo yesterday began airing several of its original productions and news programs in full high definition.

The digital initiative kicked off yesterday with Fantastico, followed by the HD broadcast of Pirates of the Caribbean—The Curse of the Black Pearl, in the Domingo Maior movie block. Today, Duas Caras, the first Brazilian telenovela completely filmed in full HD, will be broadcast, followed by Tela Quente with the movie Taxi. On Wednesday, viewers can watch Cinema Especial, which will present Closer. Also in the first week of digital TV in Brazil, Friday’s Globo Reporter will air in HDTV, as will Supercine on Saturday with the movie Hidalgo.

Digital transmissions are beginning in Sao Paulo and by 2016 should extend to the rest of Brazil. In 2008, Rio de Janeiro, Belo Horizonte, Fortaleza and Salvador will begin HD broadcasts.
