NEW YORK: ESPN Deportes, the sports broadcaster’s Spanish-language brand, is expanding into scripted entertainment for the first time with the ten-episode El Diez, focused on a professional soccer player, starring former RBD member Alonso Herrera.

The show, unveiled at ESPN Deportes’ Upfront yesterday, chronicles the life of a small-town soccer player who becomes an overnight sensation and heads to Mexico City as major clubs vie for his attention. Once signed, Chava must learn to deal with fame while aspiring to wear the club’s number 10 jersey. In addition to Herrera, the cast includes Ernesto Loera, Mauricio Quintana and Joaquin Cosio. Scheduled for a fall premiere, El Diez is a production of Animus Entertainment Group and ÉPOCA Films.

Lino García, general manager of ESPN Deportes, noted, “El Diez is an expansion of our network’s commitment to deliver sports-related content to our audience, from news and information and top sporting events, to our very first series. El Diez, with its impressive cast and top-notch production values, will offer our viewers original, culturally relevant content not ever seen on a Spanish-language sports network.”
