HYDERABAD: Production is under way on the 3D stereoscopic feature film The Prodigies, which DQ Entertainment International is producing with Onyx Films and Fidélité Films.

The project is budgeted at $28 million and is in fast-track production for a March 2011 release. Warner Bros. Pictures, Studio 37 from Orange Group and Kinology are handling distribution and sales.

The Prodigies is being adapted from a novel written by Bernard Lenteric in 1982. The film, directed by Antoine Charreyon, uses motion capture and 3D stereoscopic technologies. The story follows five young teenagers who are violently assaulted, which causes them to lash out against the world in a cold and calculating way. The masterminds come together to plot the perfect revenge on the world, and the only person who is aware of the impending doom is Jimbo Farrar, a sixth prodigy. He must fight against his five counterparts.

Aton Soumache, the chairman and CEO of Onyx Films, said: “After Renaissance, we wanted to bring a new form of visual entertainment to teenagers and young adults. The 3D stereoscopic technology offers an immersive experience combined with the ambitious and visually challenging graphic designs and a compelling storyline. The skilled team at DQE is doing great justice to this challenging theatrical production.”

Marc Missonnier, the president of Fidélité Films, commented: “This film is our first experience in animation, and we are very excited at the prospect of bringing our experience and expertise in live-action films to this project. The combined skills of Onyx and DQE are a key element of the success of The Prodigies.”

Tapaas Chakravarti, the chairman and CEO of DQE, added: “We are excited to be part of this high-quality feature film and to be pushing boundaries to deliver this stereoscopic epic feature film that will captivate audiences worldwide. The creativity and graphic story telling ability of Onyx Films is well known within the industry. Today by commencing the production of The Prodigies as a full stereoscopic 3D movie, Onyx is using DQE’s immense technical and creative capability and floor capacity to complete this production on record time. We aim for the production to be premiered and distributed worldwide by Warner Brothers and Orange Studio 37 by the beginning of second quarter of 2011.

This DQE production of The Prodigies, being a full stereoscopic feature film of such high quality represents a quantum leap into the magical world of 3D cinema, and a definitive addition to DQE’s immense capabilities. I believe that 3D cinema will open up scope for large future revenue streams for DQE.”
