TORONTO: Canada’s Documentary Channel has acquired Black Nation as part its slate of Black History Month programming.

The film examines African-American life on the streets of Detroit, along with featuring the city’s controversial church Shrine of the Black Madonna.

Black Nation, which premiered at the Dubai International Film Festival in 2008, is directed by Stockholm-based video installation artist Mats Hjelm and is his first documentary. It is an Open Door co-production with Sweden’s Herrlander Pictures, The Swedish Film Institute and Swedish Public broadcaster SVT.

Documentary Channel in Canada will air the film February 16 at 7 p.m.
