Discovery Reports 16-Percent Growth at International Nets

SILVER SPRING: First-quarter revenues at Discovery Communications gained 8 percent to $879 million, with its international networks contributing $293 million—a 16-percent gain—and delivering an operating income of $124 million, reflecting a 29-percent increase.

The international channels saw ad revenues jump 44 percent to $82 million, while distribution revenues gained 7 percent to $186 million. The U.S. networks, meanwhile, brought in $546 million, a 5-percent increase, with an operating income of $293 million, which was up 4 percent on the prior year.

Overall net profit at the company increased from $119 million to $169 million. "Discovery’s first-quarter performance was the result of strong operational execution and an improving economic environment," said David Zaslav, Discovery’s president and CEO. "The ratings strength exhibited across our diverse portfolio throughout last year was sustained in the first quarter and, with an improved global advertising environment, we were able to further monetize our increased viewership. We remain committed to executing on our operating plan and delivering on our financial commitments while investing in our brands around the globe and strengthening the content across our distribution platforms.”
