Cablevision Seeks Online Transmission for World Series

BETHPAGE: With the carriage spat between Cablevision and Fox leaving subscribers unable to watch the World Series, the provider has made an appeal to government entities and non-profit organizations to retransmit coverage of baseball’s biggest event over the Internet for free.

Cablevision cites an exemption in the 1976 Copyright Act that allows the government and non-profits the right to do so, for the purpose of serving the public interest and as long as it is not for commercial purposes. Cablevision charges: “With a simple antenna and Internet streaming capacity, a governmental entity or non-profit organization could do a tremendous public service and extend the reach of this broadcast programming—just as Congress intended.”
