BBC Worldwide Secures First Co-Production Deal in Spain

LONDON, March 7: BBC Worldwide has reached a deal with Wanda
Films in Spain to co-produce Earth’s Great Events, a new six-part series on global climactic phenomena
from the BBC Natural History Unit.

The deal marks BBC’s first co-production deal in Spain. As
part of the agreement, Wanda Films will represent the television and DVD
exploitation rights for Earth’s Great Events throughout Spain, with the remainder to be held by BBC Worldwide.

Filmed entirely in high-definition, Earth’s Great Events will feature the planet’s most breathtaking natural
events and the dramatic stories behind them, including The Great Flood in
Botswana and The Greening of the Serengeti. Brian Leith will serve as executive
producer on the new series. He is currently executive producer of Wild
China
, the BBC Natural History Unit’s first
ever co-production with China Television Media (CTV), the production arm of
Chinese state broadcaster CCTV.

Claudia Danser, the head of Spain and Portugal at BBC
Worldwide, commented: “Co-production relationships are a crucial part of BBC
Worldwide’s strategy, paving the way for ever more ambitious productions for
our global audiences to enjoy. Today’s deal with Wanda Films further
strengthens and diversifies BBC Worldwide’s Spanish business, allowing us to
work with this exciting new partner on this breathtaking new series.”

Madrid-based Wanda Films, which specializes in the
production and distribution of European and Latin American independent cinema,
has distributed more than 100 films since its creation in 1992, including Deep
Blue
, BBC Worldwide’s ocean documentary
film. Wanda Films also holds the Spanish distribution rights for Earth, the feature film from BBC Worldwide and Greenlight
Media that will accompany Planet Earth.
