BAFTA Nominees Announced

LONDON: The official list of the nominees for the British Academy of Television Arts (BAFTA) Awards has been announced, with the winners to be named on June 6.

Up for the award for best drama are Being Human, Misfits, Spooks and The Street. The nominees for best drama serial are Occupation, Red Riding, Small Island and Unforgiven. Continuing drama nominees are The Bill, Casualty, Coronation Street and EastEnders. In the category for best single drama are A Short Stay in Switzerland, Five Minutes of Heaven, Mo and The Unloved.

International series being proposed for a BAFTA win are Family Guy, Mad Men, Nurse Jackie and True Blood. Britain’s Got Talent will face off against The Graham Norton Show, Harry Hill’s TV Burp and Newswipe with Charlie Brooker for the award for best entertainment program.

On the comedy side, The Armstrong and Miller Show, The Kevin Bishop Show, Stewart Lee’s Comedy Vehicle and That Mitchell and Webb Look received nominations. There’s also an award for best situation comedy, in which the contenders are The Inbetweeners, Miranda, Peep Show and The Thick of It.

Factual series receiving a nod are Blood, Sweat and Takeaways, The Family, One Born Every Minute and Who Do You Think You Are?

For drama, the nominees for best actor are Kenneth Branagh for Wallander, Brendon Gleeson for Into The Storm, John Hurt for An Englishman in New York and David Oyelowo for Small Island. In the female performance category, contenders are Helena Bonham Carter for Enid, Sophie Okonedo for Mrs Mandela and Julie Walters, who is nominated for A Short Stay In Switzerland and Mo. Supporting nods on the male side went to Benedict Cumberbatch for Small Island, Tom Hollander for Gracie!, Gary Lewis for Mo and Matthew Macfadyen for Criminal Justice. Female supporting actress nominees went to Rebecca Hall for Red Riding 1974, Sophie Okonedo for Criminal Justice, Lauren Socha for The Unloved and Imelda Staunton for Cranford.

The performance nominees for comedy are Simon Bird for The Inbetweeners, Peter Capaldi for The Thick of It, Hugh Dennis for Outnumbered Christmas Special and David Mitchell for Peep Show. Females nominated in the category are Jo Brand for Getting On, Rebecca Front for The Thick of It, Miranda Hart for Miranda and Joanna Scanlan for Getting On. In the entertainment arena, performance nominees are Stephen Fry for QI, Harry Hill for Harry Hill’s TV Burp, Anthony McPartlin and Declan Donnelly for I’m A Celebrity…Get Me Out Of Here! and Michael McIntyre for Michael McIntyre’s Comedy Roadshow.
