A Note from the Editors About the MIPTV Edition

NEW YORK: A rundown of all the exclusive interviews and insightful trend features you’ll find in the MIPTV issue, which marks the 30th anniversary of World Screen.

We’re always talking to content executives about what’s hot right now—or what’s coming down the pipeline in six months or a year’s time. We’re constantly having meetings internally about how we make the next issue better than the last one. It’s not often that we get a chance to look back at everything we’ve done in the past or look ahead to what the content business might look like five or ten years from now. We got to do both in our MIPTV edition.

This MIPTV issue marks the 30th anniversary of World Screen. To commemorate this landmark milestone, our group editorial director, Anna Carugati, dug into our deep archive of interviews to show how the media business has transformed more in the last five years than it has done over our entire history. In our special World Screen @ 30 report, you’ll hear from presidents and CEOs of major media companies on the big-picture shifts in content consumption, while showrunners, actors and programming heads weigh in on the new age of auteur television. There’s also our Top 10, where we collated quotes from the people involved in the ten most influential shows that we have featured in our pages over the last five years. You can see the 30th Anniversary special report here.

Given all of this reflecting on the past, we figured this edition of World Screen would be the perfect opportunity to look ahead. In our “What’s Next?” feature, Elizabeth Guider speaks with content production and distribution executives and programmers about how the business of making and selling shows will continue to transform in the years ahead. We then have one-on-one interviews with executives from all segments of the industry sharing their views on where the business is headed. This includes Thomas Rabe of Bertelsmann, a massive media company making the most of digital opportunities across its portfolio; Jeremy Darroch from Sky discussing the importance of TV Everywhere; Discovery’s David Zaslav on the role of brands, and content ownership, in this new landscape; Roy Price on how Amazon Studios has upended the traditional pilot system; Victor Koo on how Youku Tudou is leading the way in China, the world’s largest OTT market; Maker Studios’ Ynon Kreiz shares his perspectives on the future of short-form content; Cecile Frot-Coutaz talks about the digital opportunities being mined at FremantleMedia; AwesomenessTV’s Brian Robbins weighs in on catering to Millennials; David Attenborough discusses how technology has transformed documentary filmmaking; and futurist Jason Silva shares his opinions on making content for big and small screens and our connected-TV future.
