Star Trek Delivers in Opening Weekend

LOS ANGELES: The new Star Trek movie opened with a $72.5-million North American box-office intake this weekend, rising to the number one spot and topping the opening weekend grosses of all previous releases in the 40-year-old franchise.

The J.J. Abrams reboot, which is being billed as "Not your father’s Star Trek," took in $30.8 million on its opening night, under the $34.4 million for Fox’s X-Men Origins: Wolverine the weekend before. (The latest in the X-Men franchise shored up $85.1 million in its first weekend, making it the biggest film opening this year.)

The Paramount Pictures release is based on the original 1960s Star Trek series, explaining how Captain Kirk first met Spock and the rest of the Starship Enterprise crew. It has received positive reviews thus far, including from devoted "Trekkies."
