Veoh Hit with Universal Music Suit

LOS ANGELES, September 5: Veoh Networks, the Internet video
site backed by former Disney chief Michael Eisner, is being sued by Universal
Music Group for copyright infringement, according to wire reports.

According to Bloomberg News, Universal filed the complaint
against Veoh in a Los Angeles federal court yesterday. “Veoh follows in the
ignominious footsteps of other recent mass infringers such as Napster,”
Universal said in the filing. “Veoh's rampant infringement will not stop until
Veoh, and those who own, control, and run it, are enjoined and held financially
responsible.''

Universal Music maintains that user-generated clips uploaded
to the Veoh site feature unlicensed music from the label. Last month, Veoh said
it was seeking court protection against any copyright infringement suits from
Universal Music Group. It filed an action in federal court to reinforce its
rights as a copyright compliant company under the provisions of the Digital
Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA), maintaining that it was not responsible for
illegal postings by users.
