LOS ANGELES: After airing just one episode, HBO has renewed the fantasy series Game of Thrones for a second season.

The April 17 premiere drew in 4.2 million viewers on HBO. The series is based on the bestselling fantasy book A Song of Ice and Fire by George R.R. Martin. It follows kings and queens, knights and renegades, liars and noblemen as they compete for power.

The show is executive produced by David Benioff and D.B. Weiss, with co-producers Carolyn Strauss, Guymon Casady, Vince Gerardis, Ralph Vicinanza and George R.R. Martin.

"We are delighted by the way David Benioff and D.B. Weiss have brought George R.R. Martin’s amazing book series to the screen, and thrilled by the support of the media and our viewers," said Michael Lombardo, the president of HBO programming. "This is the continuation of an exciting creative partnership."
