NEW YORK: General Electric (GE) and Comcast Corporation have approved a three-month extension of their merger deal for NBC Universal, as the companies wait for government approval.

The original agreement was due to expire on Friday, which marked the one-year point for the proposal of the $30 billion joint venture. The two companies have said they will wait a further 90 days, until March 3, which helps pad time in case of a drawn-out regulatory review process.

The deal has been under review by the Federal Communications Commission and the Justice Department.
