PHILADELPHIA/FAIRFIELD: Steve Burke has been appointed to lead NBC Universal as CEO following Comcast’s acquisition of a 51-percent stake in the company.

Comcast announced the appointment this weekend. Burke replaces Jeff Zucker, who will continue to serve in his position until the close of the transaction. Comcast has said that no additional structural or personnel announcements will be made until the deal closing process and timing is certain.

“Steve Burke is an experienced, talented and visionary leader with over 25 years in the media and entertainment industry," said Brian L. Roberts, chairman and CEO of Comcast. "Steve is one of the most well-respected executives in the industry, and I am confident that he will lead NBCU forward to a new era of growth.”

“I have known Steve Burke for many years and greatly respect him," added Jeff Immelt, chairman and CEO of GE. "He has deep expertise in this industry and I am very confident that he will be a strong leader for NBC Universal.”

Burke is currently COO of Comcast. He joined the company in 1998 to head up Comcast Cable after several years at The Walt Disney Company, where his roles included president of ABC.
