BOSTON: American Public Television (APT) has picked up the U.S. distribution rights to NHK’s half-hour international news program Newsline.

The English-language series delivers news, in HD, from Asia and around the world, including reports on current affairs, business, sports, science and technology trends, as well as regional weather forecasts, the latest developments in international financial markets and more. It launched on the NHK World TV 24-hour network in February of last year and now reaches more than 120 territories. APT will feed the high-definition broadcasts to U.S. public television stations live twice a day, and will offer one standard-definition feed Monday through Thursday.

“We are excited to add a high-quality news program such as Newsline to our diverse and extensive catalogue of programs,” says Cynthia Fenneman, APT’s president and CEO. “With an impressive network of global news bureaus and timely updates, Newsline will meet the needs of a discerning public television audience seeking reliable, objective news. We hear daily from viewers who want this kind of broad-scale reporting and we welcome the opportunity to work with NHK on this initiative.”
