Penned by BAFTA Award-winning writer Roger Williams, the original drama series Bang has been slated for a September 10 debut on S4C.

Set and shot on location in the steel town of Port Talbot, Bang centers on Sam, played by Jacob Ifan (Cuffs, Y Gwyll/Hinterland), a loner who has his life transformed when he comes into possession of a gun and starts to break the law. His ambitious policewoman sister Gina, played by Catrin Stewart (Doctor Who, Stella, Y Llyfrgell), is paid to uphold it and makes it her mission to find the owner of the weapon. The eight-part Joio and Artists Studio production for S4C will be distributed internationally by Banijay Rights.

Williams, the show’s creator, writer and executive producer, said: “We set out to break new ground with Bang. Reflecting the dichotomies of contemporary South Wales, the series is a crime drama and family saga made in Welsh and English set against the backdrop of an imposing industrial landscape and beautiful natural vistas. It is about the lawless and the law enforcers.”

Gub Neal, executive producer for Artists Studio, commented: “Roger Williams has created a taut, terrifically gripping drama whose characters and settings, as in the grandest tradition of family crime stories, have a really unique sense of cultural belonging and of place. The drama switches between English and Welsh language in an entirely natural way to portray dialogue as it is actually spoken in this part of Wales. We’re incredibly excited to be involved in such an individual project which is really set to capture the imagination of viewers in Wales and well beyond.”

Gethin Scourfield, executive producer for S4C, added: “The series’ strength lies in its strong sense of identity, deeply rooted in a community where both languages co-exist seamlessly. Roger and the production team have created a show with a powerful sense of identity. Port Talbot and the Afan Valley provide a spectacular backdrop to a visceral and compelling crime drama where the interaction between the Welsh and English languages bring another dimension to the story. This is a series which will strike a chord with audiences in Wales and further afield.”

Caroline Torrance, the head of scripted for Banijay Rights, said: “We are delighted to add this compelling crime drama to our scripted catalog. At Banijay Rights we believe that good story telling and strong characters are key to achieving success on the international market and Bang hits this mark.”
