MAINZ: ZDF Enterprises has signed on as a co-production partner and international distributor on a new documentary about the engineers below the decks of the Titanic, to be available in time for the 100th anniversary of the ship’s sinking next year.

From Tile Films in Ireland and Gebrüder Beetz Filmproduktion in Germany, Saving the Titanic will be available as a 90-minute special or as a two-parter. It relates the story of the ship from the perspective of those below deck, focusing on six characters from the team of engineers, using reenactments and CGI. It has a production budget of 1.6 million euros. Production begins in Dublin this summer for a January 2012 delivery.

This Irish/German co-production is being funded by ZDF Enterprises, Arte, RTÉ, Broadcasting Authority of Ireland and The Irish Film Board.
