MAINZ: Markus Schächter, director general of ZDF, will step down at the end of his term in March 2012.

Schächter’s term as head of the German public broadcaster ends March 14, 2012. The search for a successor will begin soon, with the procedure to be established at a meeting next month of the ZDF Television Council, the broadcaster’s governing body.

The Council’s chairman, Ruprecht Polenz, praised Schächter’s leadership of ZDF, calling him "an important pioneer in public broadcasting" who put ZDF on course for its digital future.
