Wimbledon to be Screened in 3D in 20-Plus Markets

BASINGSTOKE: Sony Corporation has announced that public viewing events for live 3D coverage of the Wimbledon 2011 championship finals will take place in more than 22 countries worldwide, while broadcasters in six markets have confirmed plans for 3D TV transmissions.

Sony has partnered with the All England Lawn Tennis Club to produce the Wimbledon 2011 men’s semi-finals, men’s final and women’s final in 3D.

As of this week, broadcasters in the U.K. (BBC), U.S. (ESPN 3D), Germany (Sky Deutschland), Italy (Sky Italia), the Netherlands and Sweden have confirmed plans to air the tennis tournament in 3D.

In addition, more than 170 cinema screens in the U.K., Ireland, Spain, Italy, Norway, Greece, Turkey, Portugal, Belgium, Germany, Austria, the U.S., Canada, China, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru and Uruguay will carry select Wimbledon matches in 3D. Negotiations are ongoing with broadcasters and cinema exhibitors in other markets.
