PREMIUM: BBC One controller Danny Cohen and BBC Daytime controller Liam Keelan discuss the channel’s programming strategy.

How do you schedule the channel from morning through late night, Monday through Sunday?
Daytime strips include Homes Under the Hammer, Bargain Hunt, Doctors. EastEnders airs 7:30 p.m. most weeknights. Original drama or MasterChef at 9 p.m.

Are you acquiring content from the international market?
Not a priority. Feature films, yes.

What is your approach to commissioning new productions from domestic producers?
New drama commissions include Call The Midwife (6×60’) by Neal Street Productions, Bound (6×60’) by Tiger Aspect Productions, Morton (8×60’) by Kudos Film & TV. Also commission drama by BBC Drama Productions such as One Night (4×60’) and Great Expectations (3×60’). BBC One Daytime has also commissioned new episodes of drama series Moving On, again comprised of stand-alone episodes, all linked by the common theme of how to move on in life.

Do you have any blocks or slots you are looking to fill?
Seeking more entertainment formats that feel new, original and “must see.” Also looking for more popular factual formats with broad appeal. Since top-rated Australian import Neighbours was cancelled in 2008, daytime has focused on current/social affairs, consumer and U.K.-originated drama.

Are you pursuing international co-productions? If so, what kinds of partnerships and projects are you looking for?
Yes, frequently. Example is Death In Paradise, eight-part drama series co-developed by BBC One with France Télévisions. Produced by Red Planet Pictures and Atlantique Productions in association with BBC Worldwide and Kudos Film & Television.
