ZDF Enterprises has signed an agreement for the international distribution rights, excluding Australia, for the new docuseries Inside Japan’s War.

Produced by Wildbear Entertainment, the four-part series explores World War II from Japan’s perspective, including the rise and fall of its empire and how Japanese citizens coped throughout this period. The title begins filming in late January.

Inside Japan’s War uses a combination of archive material, personal accounts, expert interviews, graphics and contemporary images to tell the story of why Japan went to war. It begins by looking at the country’s rise on the international stage and delves into the political structure, nationalism and build-up of military power. The docuseries goes on to examine the empire’s decline, from the struggle of their industries to keep up with military demands to the effects of blockades on the Japanese population.

Ralf Rueckauer, VP of ZDFE.unscripted at ZDF Enterprises, said: “We know so little about Japan’s experience in World War II, the country’s strategy and objectives, and even less about what it was like for its people living through these tumultuous times. Inside Japan’s War will give viewers a fascinating insight into a country that went from wielding vast power to suffering total devastation.”
