Travel Channel Slates New Andrew Zimmern Series

NEW YORK: Travel Channel is premiering this summer the new series Andrew Zimmern’s Driven by Food, featuring the titular TV personality, chef and food writer.

The series premieres August 16 at 9 p.m. Driven by his belief that the best way to explore a city is through the locals, Zimmern explores international cities by turning to his cab drivers to help him create his itinerary. He sets out with his new guide, whether it’s a shikara driver in Kashmir or a gondolier in Venice, to get an insider’s view of the city and visit off-the-grid dives, regional eateries and participate in or observe local activities.

In the debut episode, Zimmern heads to Rio de Janeiro, where he uses the knowledge of three local cab drivers. The culinary explorer experiences a beachside game of futevolei, the synchronized Olympic sport of rowing and more. He also checks out juice shops, sushi spots, and eats some of the best Brazilian barbecue, seafood and meats. In season one, Zimmern will also travel to Bangkok, Berlin, Chicago, Nashville and London. Additionally, he will visit Hyderabad, India, and Medellin, Colombia.

Zimmern, who hosts and executive produces the series, commented: “Any time I travel, to a new destination or an old favorite, I always walk out of an airport and get in a car. Local drivers are the first people I converse with about where I am and what I want to do. And they in turn suggest what they think I should do. They are the true experts on their own culture—they know where to eat, what to see and how to play—and the recommendations they share are more authentic than what you’ll find in any guidebook. Harness a little trust, go along for the ride and regardless of the city, you will have an unforgettable travel experience.”
