Video Interview: Behind the Scenes of Secrets of the Penguins

Secrets of the Penguins, the latest addition to the Secrets of… franchise, has debuted on National Geographic after Talesmith and a large crew spent several years enduring some of the world’s harshest environments to capture never-before-seen behavior in penguins.

Talesmith’s team, led by Nat Geo explorer and cinematographer Bertie Gregory and over 70 scientists and filmmakers, journeyed across the world to film penguins in Cape Town, South Georgia, the Galápagos Islands and Namibia. Part of the team even became the fifth-ever crew to spend an entire winter in Antarctica in order to document behaviors such as a bonded pair of Emperors practicing egg transfers.

Gregory and Talesmith’s Martin Williams and Ruth Roberts tell TV Real Weekly about the experience of making the series in such harsh environments, the safety precautions needed, the technology used and much more.
