Newen Studios’ TF1 Studio has begun production on a new original documentary about fashion designer John Galliano, with a theatrical release planned for 2023.

Directed by Kevin Macdonald, who won the Oscar for Best Documentary in 1999 for One Day in September, the Galliano documentary will be launched at the Marché du Film during the 2022 Cannes Film Festival.

The new film is fully financed by TF1 Studio with the support of Anton Capital. Condé Nast Entertainment also serves as a producer.

“TF1 Studio has a major ambition in international co-productions,” said Nathalie Toulza-Madar, deputy CEO of TF1 Studio. “In this context, we met Kevin Macdonald, whose work we admire. We were quickly convinced by his vision and ambition for this prestigious project on the iconic John Galliano. This documentary will tell the story of the man beyond the creative genius who has shaken the 1990s and 2000s. Kevin Macdonald is the best director to bring this story to screen. I hope that this first collaboration with him will be the beginning of many others.”

Sabine Chemaly, executive VP of international distribution at Newen Connect and TF1 Studio, added, “Kevin Macdonald is a talented filmmaker and documentarian who will now undertake the portrait of the famous designer John Galliano. Between the glamour of the fashion shows, the celebrity lineup and the major impact of social networks on our time, everything is gathered here to make this documentary an event when it will be released in theaters and for broadcasters all around the world. It is a privilege for Newen Connect and TF1 Studio to work with Kevin Macdonald and his teams to share the project to the widest audience possible.”
