NHK Programs Win ABU Prizes

Three of NHK’s programs have been recognized at this year’s ABU Prizes, which honor content made by broadcasters in the Asia-Pacific Broadcasting Union (ABU).

Frontiers: How Smart is AI? picked up the prize for the television and screen ABU perspective category. The title, which first aired on December 13, 2023, on the NHK BS1 channel, explores the seemingly unstoppable evolution of AI.

The ABU prize for television and screen entertainment went to Mirador: Soundscape Through Japan. The title sees beatboxer SHOW-GO travel around Japan to search for sounds that we may never be able to hear in the future unless we take climate action.

At Home in Kobe: Soccer Star Andrés Iniesta won the ABU Prize for television and screen sports. The documentary reveals how Iniesta fell in love with Japanese soccer and culture and why he ultimately decided to leave.

Founded in 1964 by NHK and other leading broadcasters, the ABU currently has 232 members from 65 countries and regions. An ABU Prize is awarded to the best entry in each of seven TV categories, seven radio categories and one category for digital media. There were 342 entries (182 for television, 110 for radio and 50 for digital media) this year.
