ITV Commissions Two-Part Prince Charles Doc from BBC Studios

BBC Studios’ Inside The Duchy (working title), a brand-new series featuring exclusive interviews with Prince Charles, His Royal Highness The Prince of Wales (HRH), about his role as the Duke of Cornwall, has been ordered by ITV.

The series will offer inside looks into The Duchy of Cornwall, the 700-year-old, 130,000-acre Royal estate, which generates an income of over £20 million per year for HRH, his family and his charitable organizations. In his interviews, Prince Charles will dive into his hands-on role as landlord, farmer and custodian of the estate, explaining the way The Duchy is run. The series marks the 50th working year that Prince Charles has helmed the sprawling property.

The film crew spent a year at The Duchy, capturing the day-to-day lives of the staff and tenants who run the grounds, which include farms, housing estates and even a prison. Bill Lyons serves as the series’ executive producer and Charlie Clay is the series producer and director. Inside The Duchy (w/t) is being distributed by Fremantle.

ITV Controller of Factual Jo Clinton-Davis said: “We’re excited to have a landmark documentary offering viewers a unique, close-quarters and intimate view of the Duchy and His Royal Highness’s role and working life within it.”

Jon Swain, head of BBC Studios’ Unscripted Productions, said: “We’re delighted to be working with ITV and opening a window onto one of the world’s most extraordinary family businesses. We’re very proud that BBC Studios’ first commission for ITV will be coming out of our Bristol production hub.”

Lyons said: “It’s rare to have access to an untold story, but that’s exactly what we discovered in The Duchy of Cornwall. These films will reveal just how much HRH The Prince of Wales has invested—personally and emotionally—into what has been his lifetime’s endeavor.”
