HBO Max Greenlights Wanninkhof Case Docuseries

HBO Max has greenlit the true-crime documentary series Dolores: The Truth About the Wanninkhof Case.

The six-part Max original centers on the story of Dolores Vázquez, a victim of a miscarriage of justice in Spain. For the first time in 20 years, Vázquez speaks publicly about her painful past and addresses questions that have yet to be answered. Dolores: The Truth About the Wanninkhof Case is produced by Unicorn in Spain for HBO Max and will premiere in the second half of 2021.

In September 2000, Vázquez was arrested as the main suspect in the murder of Rocío Wanninkhof, the daughter of her ex-partner. In the press, Vázquez was stigmatized for her sexuality, her character and her apparent indifference to the case, described as a cold, calculating and intelligent murderer. Rocío’s mother, who became a frequent guest on TV, blamed her ex-partner for her daughter’s death, destroying the public’s perception of Vázquez. She was jailed and spent 519 days in prison for a crime she never committed.

Dolores: The Truth About the Wanninkhof Case aims to rebuild the story from all points of view, using archive images, interviews with the key protagonists and a reconstruction of the events.

Xelo Montesinos, founder and CEO of Unicorn Content, said: “For the first time in 20 years, Dolores Vázquez, Loli, speaks publicly to tell her side of the story in this much-discussed case. This was one of the most serious miscarriages of justice in Spain ever, and finally, the story will be told in all its details for the first time. Reality is sometimes stranger than fiction, and in this case, it’s even more obvious. This is a thriller full of unexpected twists, a controversial and amazing personal story.”

Miguel Salvat, executive producer for HBO Max, said: “The Wanninkhof case kept a whole country and its media on the edge of its seat. Twenty years on you will hear about it from a totally different point of view. Dolores Vázquez speaks candidly, telling her raw and painful story, with the benefit of time having passed. To those thinking this couldn’t happen today, I ask why it happened then.”
