Production has begun on Lockerbie (w.t.), a new three-part series about the 1988 bombing of Pan Am flight 103 over Lockerbie, Scotland, for Sky.

From Mindhouse Productions in association with Sky Studios, the docuseries examines unanswered questions and explores the truth behind the atrocity and its aftermath through access to victims’ families, investigators, intelligence officers and other key figures who have not spoken until now.

Lockerbie is being executive produced by Arron Fellows and Nancy Strang for Mindhouse Productions, and John Dower (My Scientology Movie, Thriller in Manila) is directing.

NBCUniversal Global Distribution will handle international sales on behalf of Sky Studios.

“The tragedy of Lockerbie still looms large in our recent history, and yet we’ve not seen a long-form, forensic deep dive into the story, and nothing which brings it up to the present day,” said Poppy Dixon, director of documentaries and factual for Sky. “The rigorous and thoughtful approach that John and the team are taking leaves me in no doubt this series will do justice to this complex story, and we’re honored to be bringing it to our customers at Sky.”

“I vividly remember Lockerbie from my teenage years of growing up in a Scottish household, but revisiting the event over 30 years later, realized how little I knew about the actual event and the way it continues to reverberate down the years,” Dower said. “For me, that is a great starting point for a documentary, and I feel a real responsibility not only to the complexity of the story but also to the families on both sides of the Atlantic. I’m also delighted to be teaming up again with Louis Theroux and his new company Mindhouse to undertake this challenge.”

Strang added, “The shocking story of the Lockerbie bombing is remarkably under told in documentary form, especially given the scale of the attack and human loss and its global repercussions. It’s a privilege to have the opportunity to hear from those closest to the story—particularly the families involved—and also to work with a brilliant director like John Dower, who I know will honor their testimonies and the continuing search for the truth about what happened and why.”
