Pink Parrot Media has acquired the distribution rights to Butterfly Academy (working title), a new CGI-animated series spin-off of the forthcoming feature Butterfly Tale.

Set against the backdrop of a high school for monarch butterflies, the series will include many of the feature film’s characters, including the lovable one-winged disabled butterfly Patrick. Patrick and his friends Marty and Jennifer, among many others, navigate through the challenges of their high school life and learn about the big migration of the monarchs and all its challenges. The new prequel is being developed by Canada’s Carpediem and Germany’s Ulysses Filmproduktion.

Pink Parrot Media is currently shopping for investors and broadcast partners for the series, which is set to be completed by Q4 2023. Heidi Foss and Lienne Sawatsky are on board as screenwriters.

Production of Butterfly Tale commenced in January, with first-time film director Sophie Roy. The feature film has already been presold in France and Germany (Wild Bunch), Poland and Romania (Monolith), Former Yugoslavia (Blitz) and the Middle East (Front Row), and will be released in theaters in Q4 2022.

Tania Pinto Da Cunha, VP/partner and head of international sales and acquisitions at Pink Parrot Media, said: “We are very excited to see our special butterflies take off on new journeys. The beautiful animation and the wonderful story-lines are going to translate into a wonderful animated series that is certain to capture young audiences everywhere.”
