The Snail and the Whale, an animated film from Magic Light Pictures, has been presold to broadcasters across Europe and in Australia and Africa.

In addition to core partner ZDF in Germany, The Snail and the Whale has been picked up by France Télévisions, SVT in Sweden, DR in Denmark, RTÉ in Ireland, ABC in Australia, Showmax in Africa, Czech Television, Noga in Israel, VPRO in the Netherlands and RTV in Slovenia. More broadcasters are in discussion for the property, which will also be released in cinemas in France next year by Les Films Du Preau. The Snail and the Whale is slated to premiere in the U.K. on BBC One as part of its 2019 Christmas schedule.

The Snail and the Whale is based on the book by author Julia Donaldson and illustrator Axel Scheffler, published by Macmillan Children’s Books. It follows the adventures of a tiny snail who catches a ride on the tail of a great humpback whale in order to fulfill its dreams of seeing the world. The half-hour special is directed by Max Lang and Daniel Snaddon, produced by Michael Rose and Martin Pope at Magic Light Pictures and animated at Triggerfish Animation in Cape Town.

Rose, co-founder of Magic Light, said: “The Snail and the Whale is a great classic children’s book and we are delighted to bring it to screen with the support of broadcasters worldwide. Our brave little snail longs to travel around the world and now she will!”
