LONDON/MANCHESTER: CBBC has commissioned Channel X to produce a third season of the hit kids’ comedy series So Awkward via the independent production company’s Channel X North division.

Created by Julie Bower, So Awkward follows the adventures of three socially awkward friends who are learning that it’s good to be different. The 13×30-minute sophomore season is due to debut this summer.

Alan Marke, the managing director of Channel X, commented: “So Awkward came about when an opportunity arose to develop one of our adult comedy scripts into a children’s project. We’re thrilled that the series has been such a hit for CBBC with a third [season] having just been ordered! We wanted to create a smart comedy with quality writing and acting that doesn’t talk down to its audience and we’re really proud of what we’ve achieved.”

Jim Reid, the director of programs at Channel X, added: “Having spent the last 30 years specializing in comedy formats for adults, it’s great that we can use our expertise to develop an award-winning children’s sitcom. Because children’s shows are ordered in blocks of 13, it means there is a lot more work to get your teeth into. The dynamic on So Awkward is much more like a U.S. team-writing show, which is different for us and exciting.”
