Netflix has snapped up the exclusive worldwide rights for the family-friendly animated comedy Klaus, which marks the directorial debut of Despicable Me co-creator Sergio Pablos.

Klaus is about a desperate postman who accidentally brings about the genesis of Santa Claus. The voice cast features Jason Schwartzman, Rashida Jones, J.K. Simmons and Joan Cusack. Currently in production in Madrid, the movie combines both traditional and modern animation. The Netflix original will become available around the globe in time for the 2019 holiday season.

Tanguy Olivier, Gustavo Ferrada and Marisa Roman are serving as producers for Klaus, which is co-produced by SPA Studios, Pablos’ animation company and Atresmedia Cine. The movie is being executive produced by Jinko Gotoh (The LEGO Movie Sequel, The Little Prince, Finding Nemo).

Pablos commented: “How is it possible there’s no story about the origin of Santa Claus? He’s one of the most well-known and loved characters in the world! We felt this was a story that needed to be told and that there was no better way than with animation.”
