LONDON: FremantleMedia has secured worldwide TV rights for the music-entertainment format Sidewalk Karaoke from Pango Productions.

The all-new interactive game show takes to the streets to give unsuspecting contestants the chance to sing impromptu karaoke in order to win cash prizes. Contestants must make sure their rendition of a song scores high with the judging app, otherwise they could walk away with no money. Audiences can play along in real time using technology provided by GRAPP.

The original series launched on Maori Television in New Zealand last month. The show tripled the broadcaster’s prime-time average across all key demographics. Maori Television has commissioned a second season of the show.

Vasha Wallace, the executive VP of global acquisitions and development at FremantleMedia, said: “Sidewalk Karaoke is exactly what we know broadcasters are looking for: it’s high volume, cost effective and has been amazingly successful with phenomenal ratings, tripling the broadcaster’s prime-time average. It’s wonderfully warm, a lot of fun to watch and suitable for the whole family. We are thrilled to be working with a producer of Bailey’s caliber and New Zealand has a well-deserved reputation as being a highly creative market.”

Bailey Mackey, the CEO of Pango Productions, remarked: “Sidewalk Karaoke might not change your life but it will certainly change your night! It’s the little show with a big heart and received awesome ratings and reviews when it launched in New Zealand. We’re confident FremantleMedia is the right strategic partner to help grow our brand. Their track record in talent shows is the best in the world, but mostly they are incredibly passionate about what they do.”
