MIAMI: W Studios, the newly created joint venture between Univision Communications Inc. and producer Patricio Wills, has slated the prime-time series The Pilot (La Piloto) as its first production.

Inspired by real-life events, the series tells the story of Yolanda, a girl who dreams of becoming a pilot. She eventually finds herself flying small planes used in the drug trade, and seeks to control the illicit business once her boyfriend and former flight instructor betrays her to avoid prison. The title will air on U.S. Hispanic network UniMás in the fourth quarter of 2016.

The series is from Jorg Hiller, the writer of Tiro de Gracia and Porque el Amor Manda.

“We have started casting for this compelling story and are delighted with the phenomenal roster of interested talent to choose from,” said W Studios President Patricio Wills. “I’m looking forward to producing a project like this with such a unique and timely story line.”

“Patricio Wills is one of the best producers in our industry,” said Andres Mendoza, the VP of programming at UniMás Network. “We are thrilled to join forces with him as we continue our successful strategy of providing UniMás viewers exciting, alternative programming formats.”
