The Mediapro Studio & VICE Studios Pact for El Acantilado

The Mediapro Studio Argentina & Chile and VICE Studios have partnered to co-produce the series El Acantilado (The Cliff), a crime thriller set in Patagonia.

The series is currently under development to be shot on location in Chile. The noir-fiction series is inspired by the Aysén case, a true story that horrified people in the region after the suicides of several young men in Patagonia between 1997 and 2001.

The storyline adopts the aesthetics of a film noir and utilizes the resources typical of a police thriller by way of a narrative style that plays heavily on time to create an innovative structure and an air of suspense that surrounds the story, due to the dramatic events narrated, as well as the actual environment where it is set.

The story takes place in a small town in Patagonia, where the suicides of several teenagers have shaken local residents to the core. But, behind these deaths lies a heinous crime with political consequences and murky power relations, which become evident when the authorities, instead of arresting the guilty individuals, actually protect them, leaving the victims’ families to seek justice for their children.

Created by Martin Hodara (Black Snow), Tomas Coste and Enrique Videla, the project won the Argentine National Film Board’s (Instituto Nacional de Cine y Artes Audiovisuales de Argentina) Development Award.
