Sky Begins Production on The Lovers

Sky has put the darkly comedic romantic drama The Lovers into production, with Roisin Gallagher (The Fall, The Dry) and Johnny Flynn (Beast, Emma) set to star.

The series centers on Janet, a foul-mouthed Belfast supermarket worker, and Seamus, a handsome, self-centered political broadcaster with a seemingly perfect life in London. When the two cross paths, they instantly clash but are also drawn to each other.

Conleth Hill (Game of Thrones, Holding) stars as Janet’s supermarket boss.

Produced by Drama Republic in association with Sky Studios, The Lovers is written by award-winning playwright David Ireland (Cyprus Avenue, Ulster American) and directed by BAFTA-winning Justin Martin (Together, Prima Facie). The series is set to begin filming in Belfast at the end of the month and will air on Sky Atlantic and NOW in 2023.

“We can’t wait to start filming The Lovers and see our two brilliant leads, Johnny and Roisin, bring our love-struck odd couple to life,” said Liz Lewin and Manpreet Dosanjh, executive producers for Sky Studios. “David has written the most unique, funny and heartwarming scripts, and we look forward to shooting against the iconic backdrops of Belfast and London.”

Roanna Benn and Rebecca de Souza, executive producers for Drama Republic, added, “We are so excited that David’s beautifully crafted, romantic and subversive story is being brought to life by such a brilliant team and cast—with the hugely talented Justin Martin at the helm.”
